Casablanca is always held up as this amazing film, with a grand statement on love, and it is, but not on the way we generally think.
No joke, there was more sexual tension between the two male leads, than with Ingrid Bergman, and I mean, she isn't exactly anything to scoff at herself.
To paraphrase reynauld here
"if I was a woman, Rick would be the one person I'd go for, and the fact that I'm telling this to a beautiful lady should show you how much I mean that"
Do they have to spell it out anymore?
And at the end, Rick doesn't think of the greater good, he just wants reynauld for himself, that is his character arc.
