Why did the first Austin Powers do just OK at the box office while the latter two were big hits?

It's a little similar to the Dark Knight trilogy - Batman Begins does 300+ million, yet its two sequels (The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) both did a billion each.

Did people just not give the first Austin Powers much thought until they checked it out on video by word of mouth or something? I mean, the first only did $67 million while the second one did $312 million and the third one did approximately $297 million.
